In today’s world, the term ‘occultism’ often conjures up images of dark, mystical practices and shadowy figures. Yet, despite its somewhat sinister reputation, occultism continues to gain popularity among modern-day spiritual seekers.
More people are taking an interest in what could be called Occult practices and looking into the spiritual aspects of life, the relationship between humans and the divine, and the impact of supernatural forces on our lives. This interest has also caused a surge in occult-based businesses, such as tarot readings, magical shops, and astrology services, with many people claiming to be experts.
The word “Occult” simply means “Hidden” yet innumerable horror stories and Hollywood films have demonized (forgive the pun) the word and have created fear and suspicion of those who use it; let alone claim to have an interest in “occult topics”. Often those who seek to dismiss occultists as being “evil” or “Satanic” do so through ignorance and the indoctrination of dogmatic, often monotheistic religions.
Occultists generally believe that there is an unseen world of supernatural forces and energies that govern or, at the least are part of our lives. This unseen world can be thought of as being “hidden” from all but those who seek it out.
In general terms, the Occultist seeks to gain a deeper understanding of their own personal connection with themselves and the Cosmos.
Many occultists would argue that the true insights offered by past spiritual teachers only hint at their own experiences of the Universe just as the parables of Jesus had both a material and spiritual meaning. The first was for the masses and the second for the disciple seeking a more profound “truth”.
Thus, the Occultist will attempt to gain insight into and control over the events in their lives, as well as divine knowledge. Depending on the occultist, this may include gaining insights through astrology, tarot cards, numerology, and other forms of divination as well as creating rituals to explore aspects of their own psyche and connections with what we could call a spiritual realm.
The oft-quoted and generally misunderstood phrase by Crowley, “Do What Thou Wilt”, is held as an example of the self-serving, egotistical, and manipulative nature of those who are involved in the Occult.
More relevantly the full quote is…
“There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt.
Love is the law, love under will.” - Crowley
If you bother to read Crowley’s work, you’ll probably discover that “do what thou wilt” means something like “Figure out your true spiritual purpose and then try your best to achieve it.”
Is it dangerous to study the occult?
This is often a question asked by those coming to these ideas, a question inspired by the novels and films which seek to entertain and thrill or the religious evangelical.
I would argue that any spiritual path is only as dangerous as those who seek to travel it. There are those who follow the religions of “The Book” (Islam. Judaism and Christianity) who perpetrate the evils which are condemned within their own teachings, so it seems disingenuous to point the finger at every occultist and claim them to be engaging in depraved activities.
The deep study of any spiritual tradition which challenges a personal perception of the world can, I would suggest, cause psychological and emotional discomfort.
The terms “spiritual rebirth” and “spiritual awakening” are not misused when considering the impact of changing persona awareness of the “way the world works” since it can be a challenging time. All spiritual schools are based upon some kind of mentoring and support which is often seen as an essential component for the aspiring seeker.
Personal revelations and insights can be very challenging to understand and reconcile with who we are, and who we are becoming. This is even more true when it comes to any form of spiritual understanding.
The growth in Occultism
The growth in occultism can be attributed to the widespread availability of occult books, websites, and even television shows that discuss and teach occult practices. These resources are often used to supplement traditional spirituality, offering alternative spiritual ideas and practices.
When it comes to the occult, the internet has been a great source of both knowledge and misinformation. Sites dedicated to the occult often have a wide range of information and advice related to various magical subjects. However, it is important to remain discerning as not all advice found online is reliable or safe.
Despite its reputation, occultism set in a modern context can be a valuable path to spiritual growth, when practised with due diligence, and I would argue with the support of a teacher or mentor. It can offer deeper insight into the spiritual side of life and provide opportunities for personal transformation and inner exploration.
